<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p> Since recent times, mankind has entirely changed from rural to an urban society. This tremendous step was performed in western societies almost during the 20th century; however, many developing countries are still in an ongoing transition stage. These areas have to be monitored and mapped on a regular basis and satellite remote sensing images provide a valuable and irreplaceable source for urban monitoring. The urban areas in the developing world are under constant pressure of a growing population. Efficient urban information system is a vital pre-requisite for planned development. There is an urgent need to adopt Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System approach in urban development and monitoring process for implementing pragmatic plan of urban development. The plan must incorporate an integrated approach of spatial modeling using Remote Sensing Data, GIS database and GPS solutions. 3D city models of urban areas are an important input for many applications in the field of urban monitoring. The present study aimed at development of techniques for 3D modeling of buildings for urban morphological analysis and to implement encoding standards prescribed in &#8216;OGC City GML&#8217; for urban features. An attempt has been to develop a 3D city model with level of details 1 (LOD 1) for part of city of Ahmedabad in State of Gujarat, India. </p><p>Keywords: Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Digital Terrain Model (DTM)/ Digital Surface Model (DSM), Stereo image, Orthoimage, Virtual reality. </p>
