Till now, there are many types of train detection in the world such as track circuit, axle counter and so on. Train detection is a vital part of the signaling system that gains information about the positions of movable objects such as railway vehicles, moving units on crossings and obstacles on the railway network. The type of train detection is selected due to several factors such as safety, efficiency, technology, and environment. In this paper, train counter is proposed as the new type of train detection. The train counter consists of counter 1, counter 2 on the pole and the controller. The counter as detector is a RGB camera that detects and counts a train at an area. The controller as evaluator is a device that processes the information from the detector 1 and 2, furthermore it outputs train detection status to interlocking system. When the train arrives and stops at the train detection block, the detector 1 will detect and count the train, furthermore the other detector detects the train and counts when the train passes away from the train detection block. The controller processes the information and outputs train detection block status that is “occupied”. Thus, the train counter is the other alternative of train detection that allows a low cost configuration, simple to maintain, and minimalized device on the trackside. In addition, the train counter can be integrated with ATO, ATP and ATC.
