ABSTRACT

In this study was aimed to determine the structure and localization of the orbital glands of male rabbit.
For this purpose we used six materials that belong to tree male rabbits. For histological examinations
the tissue sections were stained by Hematoxylin Eosin (HE), Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS), Alcian Blue
(AB), Periodic Acid Schiff-Alcian Blue (PAS/AB) (pH 2.5). The lacrimal gland was composed of three
lobe. The two lobes divided as caudal and rostral were located at the ventral of eyeball. The other that is
smaller was located caudo-dorsally. The smaller lobe was 7,55±1,06 mm length, 4,94±0,41 mm width
and, 1,47±0,2 mm thickness. The length, width and thickness of caudal lobe which was the located in
the ventral of eyeball was 13,85±0,04 mm, 3,74±0,13 mm and 2,18±0,34 mm, respectively. Rostral lobe
was the biggest lobe and divided into two parts as lateral and medial. While the length, width and
thickness measurements of the lateral part was in 22,81±1,67 mm, 6,3±0,01 mm and 4,5±0,2 mm, the
medial part was in 21.34±2,19 mm, 3,42±0,94 mm and 3,59±0,7 mm, respectively. Except from
lacrimal gland, there was harderian gland in the medial of eyeball. This gland was relatively big and
occurred from two part which seen white and pink color. The length, width and thickness measurements
of this gland were in 20,16±1,5 mm, 15,99±0,86 mm and 6±0,16 mm respectively. Microscopically, all
lobes of lacrimal gland that were formed from tubuloacinar type have intralobular and interlobular
excretory ducts. The nuclei of some acinar cells were located in the basal part and the cytoplasm was
observed to be granular. While the nuclei of the remaining acinar cells were located in the subcentral
part and the cytoplasm was stained dark eosinophilic. The apical part of the cytoplasm of epithelial cells
lining the intralobular and interlobular excretory ducts was stained with AB (+), PAS (+) and, AB-PAS
(+). In harderian gland, the cytoplasm of acinar cells of white lobe was more eosinophilic compared to
the pink lobe. The excretory ducts were located interlobular in the white lobe. The nuclei of the acinar
cells in pink lobe were in basal location and the cytoplasm was observed to be foamy. The excretory
ducts were located intralobular in the pink lobe. In both lobes, the apical part of cytoplasm of cells
lining the intralobular and interlobular excretory ducts was stained with AB (+), PAS (+) and, AB-PAS
(+). In this study, the morphological structures of glands around the eyeball in male rabbit were
determined and the obtained data have been presented to researchers whose will work on issue.
