<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p> Violence against women can be physical, psychological or sexual. United Nations General Assembly&#8217;s declaration defines the term &#8220;violence against women&#8221; as any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life. Verbal, physical and psychological violence ranging from depriving women of economical needs to beating, in addition to sexual violence and honor killing can be observed in Turkey. Most forms of violence result from traditional practices. In many instances that seem to be &#8220;a suicide&#8221;, women, in fact, were either forced to commit a suicide or killed. Many women, despite the fact that they comply with the expectations of their families and social environment, constantly live under this threat. Developing communication environment turned press into a sector which grows faster than most other communication means and thus it has a wider range of impact. The main reason to study the position of the press among mass media is its effective application and efficiency in reaching a goal. This study will be conducted on five Turkish National Newspapers with the most circulation within the country. The news relating violence against women in these newspapers will be scrutinized. In this study a theoretical narration of the present situation of violence against women will be given and the news about it in the press will be analyzed. </p><p>Keywords: Violence against women, Media, Press. </p>
