The Anatolian Seljuk Empire, which shaped the Anatolia of the Middle Ages and left its traces on later civilizations, contributed to the formation of Anatolian Turkish art by influencing a wide range of fields, including hand-made products and architecture. The Kubad Abad Palace, an important work of art from the Anatolian Seljuk period, is of great importance in that it was one of the first palace buildings of Turkish architecture. The various animal figures embellishing the numerous lovely tiles covering the inner walls of the palace serve as an artistic resource even today. These figures included animals existing in nature, such as birds, lions, deer, dogs, horses, as well as mythological figures, such as double-headed eagles, sirens, dragons and half-human-half-animal creatures. In order to ascertain why the peacock, with its religious and symbolic meanings, was among the animals applied in Turkish architectural embellishment, it is essential to investigate the style and characteristics of animal portrayal of the era. These portrayals of the peacock, with its great importance in Turkish art and history, speak to Turkish culture, ways of living and beliefs. This bird species, attracting attention for its colorful and decorative plumage, found expression on the wall tiles of the Kubad Abad Palace in various styles, compositions, colors and forms. To assess the importance of these peacock figures and to understand them thoroughly, this study describes and examines in detail the characteristics of the peacock figures on the walls of the Kubad Abad Palace.
