ABSTRACT

Fashion is a polysemous word. It has several meanings and applications ranging from the way and manner of doing things to styles in clothes, music, decorations, lifestyle and the like. It is an expression of sense in a particular style. Concerning clothing, it is a language understood by those who create or wear it and those who behold and appreciate it. It speaks and passes on a message. It is therefore, a means of communication. Communication has various forms – verbal and non-verbal. Fashion is a non-verbal channel of expressing one’s feelings, ideas, thoughts, desires, interests, profession and so on. Given the significance of communication in every human interaction, fashion therefore, becomes needful in transmitting messages. It is a vital aspect of culture and since culture is dynamic, varying with place and time, fashion is also dynamic. Hence there are different forms of fashion, varying with persons, places, time, religion, culture, traditions, profession and age. It depicts creativity, imaginative art and sociocultural beliefs. It paints a picture of virtues and vices. It therefore, has an ethical side to it. This paper discusses fashion as a non-verbal language, its importance, modes and effects. It examines the various possible messages transmitted and takes a look at the ethical issues involved. The discussion uses Nigeria, our country, as a case study and is backed up with illustrations in its various forms.
