The ways of the development of the nude genre in Japan are analysed in the article. Traditional approaches of the body depiction are illustrated, the role of the European art in the formation of the genre is defined, the contribution of the Japanese masters to its development is shown. The overall picture of evolution of the genre since the end of the XIXth up to the middle of the XXth centuries is reconstructed, its outstanding representatives are determined.
