ABSTRACT

Georgia is a multiethnic country where various religious groups have cohabited for a long period, even
though their demographic behaviour has been different. This has influenced the country’s demographic
development.

Since 1970s, Georgia has become a demographically aged country. Although, the process of aging
within various ethno-social environments has been progressing differentially that has been conditioned
by the historically formed traditions, customs, religious faith, worldview, and viewpoints on the family
and mode of life.

In the 20th century, the process of demographic aging within different national and religious
groups was characterized by many specifics caused by a differentiated impact that various factors had
on the demographic aging in different periods.

Intensive emigrational processes in the post-Soviet period had contributed to the acceleration of
the process of aging in all ethnic and religious groups.

The work examines the changes to the age structure of individual ethnic and religious groups
residing in Georgia and the underlying causes in the 20th and 21st centuries. In addition, there are
generalized the results of the research on the demographic and self-preservative behaviour of orthodox
christians conducted by the Institute of Demography and Sociology of Georgia in 2015. The work
provides an analysis of the process of aging of the main religious- orthodox group in Georgia.
There have been drawn the conclusions according to which, in the longer term, the ethnic and
religious differentiation of the regimes of replacement (reproduction) of population is likely to decrease.
The process of equalization of demographic development is underway that provides more preconditions
for the elaboration and implementation of a more efficient demographic policy in the future.
