ABSTRACT

Management of a higher education institution can be examined from various angles, in a variety of aspects, both in terms of managing knowledge and information and managing information technology and system.
This paper indicates selected aspects of knowledge and information management in the educational process of a higher education institution and its environment.
Knowledge expansiveness, flow and conversion would not be possible without an appropriate human capital of lecturers and university staff, students and structural capital of a university. Thus, the specificity of the functioning of a library in a higher education institution requires introduction of specific solutions in the area of information systems. The ancillary role of a library in the area of making books and information about them available, as well as exchange of resources between libraries, makes it necessary to adapt the information system to the needs of both users of a library and its staff.
In a knowledge-based society, the role of higher education is perceived as broad, and its tasks and missions are continuously increasing to keep up with the increasingly globalised modern world – in various spheres and areas of the functioning of a human being who has an influence on its continuous progress-evolution.
Higher education, which constitutes the basis of social and economic life, contributes to the development of academic thought, scientific potential and research conducted in a higher education institution. The key desiderata contained in this paper are cooperation of lecturers and students in this area with public administration and people of science and with the environment of a university.
Information flow, analysis, processing, storage and making it available – these are elements on which fundamental tasks in managing every organisation, including a university, are based. Information technologies undergo continuous and dynamic transformation. The paper characterises the basic issues connected with information management and information technology in an organisation that provides educational services. It also discusses practical aspects of using information systems in managing a higher education institution. The paper notices that reliable, complete, real information is of fundamental importance in managing a school oriented towards providing educational services. The basic tasks of information tools in managing a university are to provide the managerial staff with information that will allow them to take appropriate key decisions for the organisation.
