The problem addressed by this Action Research Project (ARP) was that many sixth grade students lack comprehension skills. This problem statement comes from meaning and vocabulary. With that being said that is a sub set of identifying words in a text. Nevertheless, sixth graders also do not notice or utilize context clues in a passage. So the end result means the students don’t understand the meaning of what they have read in a text. In addition to that, many students are not familiar with word attack skills for example context clues, structural analysis, phonics, and dictionary skills. You will find this problem when you look at the students Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores for the fifth grade school year. Many students don’t know that there are three types of context clues, which are: picture, visual, and syntactic clues. All these clues aid in determining meaning of words in a text. This also helps students identify unfamiliar words in a text. Nonetheless, as a teacher you have to give many criterion-referenced tests, direct assessments, and many other teacher-made tests. You will find that as a teacher you have to motivate students to learn. Not all students are sponges that soak up our knowledge, so as a teacher it is our job to educate them.
