ABSTRACT

This paper aims at identifying the training needs of the faculty members at Salman bin Abdulaziz University in the areas of (teaching, research, community service). The researcher avails himself of the descriptive method in this research, using a questionnaire as a research tool, which was duly scrutinised for reliability and consistency, and which was responded to by 218 faculty members. The research found a great need for training in all areas (teaching, research, community service). In the training needs in the area of teaching, ‘communication skills for effective teaching’ came out first. In the area of research, ‘writing scientific reports’ ranked top in the questionnaire, whereas ‘patents’ ranked bottom. In the area of Community Service, ‘professional training skills’ ranked top, and at the bottom end of the scale came ‘the art of promoting academic performance.’ The findings of this study have made palpable the striking unison in the responses of the faculty members apropos of the training needs, i.e. the variation in the responses was of little statistical significance irrespective of such variables as (gender, nationality, specialisation, academic rank, teaching experience, source of latest degree obtained) as per all three areas (teaching, research, community service). Amongst the deviations from the general results in this regard was teaching experience, which affected the results in the area of research: faculty members with teaching experience of 10 or more years exhibit a stronger proclivity towards stressing their need for training in research. Another deviation was ‘source of last degree obtained’. Insofar as Community Service is concerned, it was found out that faculty members from Arab countries other than KSA exhibited a greater need for training than their Saudi counterparts. There were also some statistically significant differences in the two areas (teaching and research) in favour of those who have completed two training courses, whereas no such differences were revealed in the area of Community Service. Eventually, the researcher has established a number of recommendations and suggestions based on the findings of his research.
