ABSTRACT

Continued social progress, to a great extent, is contingent on people’s attitudes and responsibilities, on the quality of education they receive and on their experiences with multicultural pedagogy. This paper explores and underscored the potential of multicultural pedagogy as well as appraises its viability in Latvian schools in terms of facilitating social interaction and tolerance. In addition, the paper discusses how Latvian educational institutions can contribute to the emergence of a cohesive nation and a democratic society, helping bridge the ethnic schism and overcome alienation. Finally, the importance of teachers’ personal attitudes and professional competences is emphasised for building awareness of social problems and facilitating their successful resolution in a multicultural learning environment.
