This paper discusses the theoretical and practical training that future teachers of primary and secondary education receive in Greece. Greater emphasis is placed on student teaching as an essential part of teacher training. Its significant role is stressed out through the presentation and the analysis of both the courses that comprise the curricula of the university departments that train future teachers and the relevant pedagogical literature. The present state regarding student teaching in Greece is recorded and the reasons for its incorporation in or its absence from the university departments’ curricula are analyzed. Furthermore, the organization and implementation of student teaching in Greece are approached in a critical hermeneutic way. The basic conclusions of the study are the following: a) the departments of primary education seem to cultivate a culture of field experiences, even though the implementation of student teaching varies by universities and department; b) student teaching is highly disregarded in departments of secondary education, which seem to aim for scientists rather than for teachers. In general, the urgent need rises to focus more on students’field experience.
