ABSTRACT

National security is a crucial issue bearing on the survival of any nation as an entity. Security implies the absence of threats to life and properties and a guarantee that where threats exist they will be promptly brought under control without harm. Security and stability are two sides of the same coin and must be addressed together in security issue. Nigeria could be regarded as being very fortunate to have had only very few external threats from its neighbours. However same cannot be said for internal threats. The nation has had a litany of threats to its security from within the country. In recent times, the agitations in Niger-Delta geopolitical zone and the Boko Haram insurgence in the North-East geopolitical have remained intractable security issues. The primary methods of maintaining external and internal security are by employing the various security agencies. Containing the internal threats is hardly what the State Policy Force or allied groups can do alone. Nigeria needs a citizenry that is adequately educated in security wise. It is the belief of the writers that an adequately security educated people will reduce the pressure the military and Para-military forces and agencies with which they have to contend. Since there is a limit to what the military and allied forces can achieve in the absence of a citizenry that is not security conscious, the writers are contending that security education is made compulsory at all levels of education throughout the country. Aware the security education can only be effectively implemented when there is a good crop of teachers at all a level; the writers advocate an approach that would help train the needed teacher manpower for the implementation of security education. The methods of infusion and introduction of programmes in security education and literacy would be considered.
