This paper will focus on why many women composers have been completely forgotten in the standard history of Western music and is exemplified with the French 17th century composer Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre. She was known as “la merveille de notre siècle” - the miracle of our century. So why is she almost completely forgotten today and why have music historians up till now apparently neglected women composers? It might therefore be necessary to include other factors while comprising a music history. Many researchers in this field are now starting to have reservations about forcing women’s lives into male categories, experiences, traditional means, and the usage of the traditional music history periods, which has often resulted in women’s disappearance from historical accounts. This article will also address the issue of how can we put La Guerre and her female colleagues back into history again.
