<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>We propose and test a coal production scheduling problem.  Using production and transportation cost estimates from independent coal mines in Illinois, Virginia, and Pennsylvania,  a hypothetical model was developed and tested using generalized reduced gradient search for nonlinear optimization.  The results of our tests indicate that the model has potential for decision support in the mineral industry.  </p>
