ABSTRACT

Computer-based language corpora has become an effective solution for teaching not only vocabulary, but also grammar and language use to learners of English as a foreign language (Al Saeed, Waly; 2009). The fact that corpora-based language teaching has been making its first steps leads to the conclusion that more research is needed on the implementation of corpora when it comes to teaching not only English but other languages. The present study has three main aims. Firstly, it sheds light on the use of Russian computer-based corpora in the Russian as a foreign language classroom giving examples of the ways Russian corpora can be used in Russian L2 classroom based on the activities designed by Al Saeed and Waly (2009). Secondly, it provides learners’ perceptions on their experiences of using Russian corpora in the classroom (two classes 10 and 12 learners each). Finally, it outlines the problems teachers face with while implementing Russian computer-based corpora in their classrooms (four teachers in total). The results of the data analysis point out that while the students and teachers have positive experience of using Russian corpora in the classroom, there are some important issues to pay attention to. Designing corpus-based activities, it is not only vital to take into consideration learners’ cultural, educational backgrounds and age groups, but most importantly, the peculiarity of the grammatical structure of the language learners deal with.
