Teaching the English language especially to learners from countries where it is not their mother tongue needs to be designed on methodologies that would promise positive results. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), just like the rest of the universities and colleges in the country welcome students from different parts of the world. In particular, PUP has a program which admits students from neighboring Asian countries. This program started in the 90’s. To be admitted to bachelor or post graduate studies of the PUP System, foreign students need to undergo the Entry Level Examination of the university which is manned by its Center for Language Learning (CLT). This examination places a particular student in his/her proper language learning level. Once admitted, intensive lessons on English Grammar and language, listening, speaking and writing will be undertaken by the student. Each study area is composed of exercises which measure the students’ English language abilities and skills that in the end would make them ready in hurdling the rigorous aspects of higher level studies.
