This study explores the relationship between Pasifika students’ belief in their mathematics ability and their choice of majors for their bachelor’s degree in business. Pasifika is a term used to describe people living in New Zealand who identify with the Pasifika Islands because of their ancestry or heritage. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Pasifika students tend to have less interest in first year university mathematics so are reluctant to enrol in business subjects that require higher mathematical knowledge such as Accounting and Finance. Data will be gathered via a survey questionnaire completed by students who are undertaking a Bachelor’s degree in Business at a large university in New Zealand. Further data will be collected through focus group meetings. Quantitative data will be analysed by statistical methods while qualitative data will be analysed using descriptive narrative to capture the lived experiences of the Pasifika students. The findings will be interpreted using the self-efficacy theoretical framework. The Findings of this study have the potential to inform educators, tertiary intuitions and policy makers of the barriers faced by Pasifika students in mathematics education and how this could be overcome to assist students from this disadvantaged community.
