ABSTRACT

From teens listening to music on their smartphones to adults carrying out conference meetings through social media, we have come to depend and rely on music and social media for a lot of our entertainment, professional and communication activities. This study explores the use of music and social media for teaching and learning the English language. English language learners come from many different backgrounds and cultures. Making the material more interesting and relevant to them increases their motivations. Using music to learn English has been shown to make the learning process more enjoyable for the learners. Among others benefits, music can help improve vocabulary, pronunciation and memory. Examples of music use for this purpose include listening to songs and reading their lyrics. Social Media, on the other hand, give learners the opportunity to connect and communicate with native speakers and other learners. Learners report that communicating with native speakers helps improve their accents. Further results show that social media can be used to practice English by playing multiplayer games, chatting online and making use of audio and video calls. The study also discusses potential challenges that may be faced when using music and social media to teach English. Finally, the study concludes with the prediction that the use of music and social media for teaching and learning the English language will continue to increase.
