<title>ABSTRACT</title>
<p>In this work, the optical absorption, photoluminescence and EPR spectra of a series samarium doped lead-borate glasses and vitroceramics were investigated and analyzed. Samples in the xSm2O3•(100-x)[4B2O3•PbO] composition where x=0-40 mol% Sm2O3 were prepared by melt-quenching method. The purpose of this paper was to integrate of the samarium ions in glasses and vitroceramics and to investigate of the optical, luminescence and magnetic properties of the obtained system in order to possible applications of these materials in the fields of optics. The XRD patterns of the samples reveal amorphous nature of the glasses without signs of crystalline phase for low Sm2O3 content in the host matrix. The surface morphological aspects of the samples are examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) data and optical spectra analysis show that the samarium ions are incorporated into the glass network as Sm3+ (4f5, 6H5/2) ions. The emission bands of the Sm3+ ions depend on the basic glass composition as well as concentration and local structure of the Sm3+ luminescence centers. The gradual increase of the Sm2O3 content in the host lead borate network determines changes of the EPR spectra.</p>
